3 Culture Land of Voltaire, Ferney-Voltaire

The Château of Voltaire was built between 1758 and 1766. The author spent the last 20 years of his life here. Voltaire led his great campaigns against intolerance, put his hand to architecture and town planning, all the while continuing his literary output at this Château which became the focal point of intellectual life in Enlightenment Europe.


On 30 May 2018, the château will re-open to the public after 3 years of renovation work. Discover the redesigned visit itinerary with new furniture, objects and paintings and multimedia displays give you a better understanding of the life of Voltaire.
Between 1759 and 1778 at Ferney, Voltaire developed his model of an ideal city working by turns as town planner, architect, gardener, industrialist, political writer and man of the theatre.
