Description

  • The Gruyères castle surmounting the medieval town is remarkable for its imposing architecture and its historical collections. Furthermore, the innovative and breathtaking Multimedia show «Gruyères» brings the visitor out of time. The town itself, has so much to appeal to one: the magnificent backdrop of mountains, the buildings, and last but not least the Museum of HR Giger, the creator of Alien, and the Tibet Museum. Gruyères has endowed its name both to the region and to the delicious cheese.

The visit of the castle offers a walk through eight centuries. The ground floor and the mighty dunjeon are from the 13th century while the main building was reconstructed in Renaissance style at the turn of the 16th century. The baroque interior as well as the French garden remind of the period of the bailiffs from Fribourg. The landscapes in Romantic style were painted by J.-B. Camille Corot and B. Menn at the middle of the 19th century. Works of fantastic art, temporary exhibitions as well as multiple activities lead us to the 21st century.
